Haha, I giggled all the way through that account. Tony sounds like an excellent dog, of strong and noble character. He is probably just totally perplexed by the whole exercise, you need to sit him down and explain exactly what is going on. Well, try to sit him down, anyway, haha.
Actually, I am surprised you did not already know that it is impossible to make a dog sit down by pushing on them. As you discovered, the best you can do is make them topple over sideways, which they find very irritating.
